Since “Lincoln” is being released, here’s a little info on the people that wish to secede and their detractors. You can check it out for yourself here, or just read this.
We the People. A government website set up so that Americans have a way to engage their government. You can go online and sign existing petitions, or start your own. The current time limits and signature thresholds are:
To cross the first threshold and be searchable within WhiteHouse.gov, a petition must reach 150 signatures within 30 days.
To cross the second threshold and require a response, a petition must reach 25,000 signatures within 30 days.
Currently there are 191 petitions listed on the site. By my count, about 70 of them deal either with secession or appeals not to secede. I didn’t include them all, but here are some of them (And no, the grammar mistakes are not mine. I tried to keep it true to the original submissions. Speeling counts).
Texas’ secession petition has the most signatures, but some citizens don’t want to go:
– Allow the city of El Paso to secede from the state of Texas. El Paso is tired of being a second class city within Texas – 955
Here are some of the other ones against secession or the citizens desiring such:
– Deport everyone that signed a petition to withdraw their state from the united states of America – 22,669
– Strip the Citizenship from Everyone who Signed a Petition to Secede and Exile Them – 14,188
– Strip the citizen ship of all those who signed petitions to secede from the United States of America -199
– Disregard attempts to withdraw the state of Texas from the union. United we stand, divided we fall. – 1119
– Peacefully grant to City of Atlanta leave to withdraw from the State of Georgia and remain part of the United States – 1332
– Affirm that the State of North Carolina is and will continue to be one of these United States of America – 2,110
– Force all states to pay their portion of the national debt before they can secede from the union – 5,912
– Keep the United States United – 4,447
