UF/UF 285: It’s the economy stupid!

If the cure kills you in a different way, aren’t you still dead?  That, in effect, is what the President is supposing as he hints at lifting some Corona Virus restrictions to get the country and the economy moving again.

We break that premise down tonight as well as play Where is Uncle Joe? Biden that is.  He’s the presumptive nominee for the Democratic party and he can’t seem to get on TV at the moment.  With his disjointed thoughts and slurring style of speech lately maybe that’s a good thing.

We can’t stop what’s’ coming for you Joe. The enemy is ironically, from with-in. Kamala, Spartacus, Faux-cohontas, The Mayor, they’ll be lining up to get you now. We can stop it for you.

Joe Biden told a very admirable story about honoring a sailor during his time as Vice President. Sadly, minus some minor facts, the whole episode was made up, a mere creation of Joe’s mind.

Still time to salvage your legacy Joe. Take our advice. Go home to Delaware and enjoy your popularity.

UF/UF 185: Year End Review-tacular

Well we survived another one, as hard as it is to believe. Lots of stuff packed into 12 short months. We’ll recap some of it, make a few predictions, say goodbye to some other things.

“I’ll get you, my pretty, and your little dog too.” Maybe not a strong physical similarity, but I thought it was funny anyway

Nancy Pelosi once infamously said “We have to pass the bill so we can know what is in it.” Which seems to me a really stupid way to pass legislation that will have such a huge impact on our lives.

However, Nancy’s said some pretty stupid things in her time, particularly when it comes to healthcare.  In the following clip, she exhorts musicians to “Quit their jobs to explore their art”, because, don’t worry, the government will provide healthcare. Yeah, she said that. Watch the clip. It’s stupefying any one would say that, much less a politician. She said it’s “entrepreneurial.”

If you explore Pelosi’s thinking (such as it is) you realize why she would say such a thing. And that is because she believes healthcare is a “right.” She actually says that democrats have made it a right.

Here’s the “Bill of Rights.”  I see no healthcare amendment.

I assume it was written by people much smarter than me, but I didn’t see anything about healthcare. What common sense tells me is that if something is declared to be  a right as Pelosi describes it, someone has to provide it, and in this case it is the government. Which means, if you break it down, that it’s you and me.  Nancy Pelosi says that you and I have an obligation to provide healthcare to people that don’t have it. She says if someone wants to go off and learn the jazz flute, you and I have an obligation to provide it. Because it has to come from somewhere. I’m also sure, based on her immigration philosophy, we would also have an obligation to provide it to people that aren’t even citizens. I’m glad our country was discovered before Nancy was around.

Before we go any further, I don’t believe we should leave people to die in the street, so hold off with the heartless conservative B.S.  I also don’t believe it is up to Nancy Pelosi to tell the population of the United States that they have to pull the weight of people that want to sit around and learn to play the jazz flute.  Yes, of course, I know it’s more complicated than that and that not everyone without healthcare wants to learn an instrument.  I’m making a point, this is a blog, sue me. I believe healthcare needs reformed. Insurance companies don’t do anyone favors. But I don’t think Obamacare or socialized medicine is the answer. I do think that Obamacare is the first step towards a socialized system, no matter how broken it is now. How do you fix Obamacare? Socialize the whole thing.

An article I ran across says it better than I ever could. Theodore Dalrymple is the pen name for Anthony Daniels, a British physician.  He wrote an opinion piece for the Wall Street Journal. I’ve quoted part of the article below, and linked it in it’s entirety at the bottom of this post;

If there is a right to health care, someone has the duty to provide it. Inevitably, that “someone” is the government. Concrete benefits in pursuance of abstract rights, however, can be provided by the government only by constant coercion.

Moreover, the right to grant is also the right to deny. And in times of economic stringency, when the first call on public expenditure is the payment of the salaries and pensions of health-care staff, we can rely with absolute confidence on the capacity of government sophists to find good reasons for doing bad things.

The question of health care is not one of rights but of how best in practice to organize it. America is certainly not a perfect model in this regard. But neither is Britain, where a universal right to health care has been recognized longest in the Western world.

Not coincidentally, the U.K. is by far the most unpleasant country in which to be ill in the Western world. Even Greeks living in Britain return home for medical treatment if they are physically able to do so

The government-run health-care system—which in the U.K. is believed to be the necessary institutional corollary to an inalienable right to health care—has pauperized the entire population. This is not to say that in every last case the treatment is bad: A pauper may be well or badly treated, according to the inclination, temperament and abilities of those providing the treatment. But a pauper must accept what he is given.

In any case, the universality of government health care in pursuance of the abstract right to it in Britain has not ensured equality. After 60 years of universal health care, free at the point of usage and funded by taxation, inequalities between the richest and poorest sections of the population have not been reduced. But Britain does have the dirtiest, most broken-down hospitals in Europe.

There is no right to health care—any more than there is a right to chicken Kiev every second Thursday of the month

Whether for or against, you should take the time to go read the whole thing. It’s our philosophy that should determine our direction. Nancy Pelosi seems to be void of a philosophy that would respect the basic decency of Americans with the shallow notion that providing things to people contributes to their long term welfare, but in fact, over time, contributes to robbing them of their basic human dignity.

Obamacare, your rights, and if it’s so good, why don’t they want it?

So, I don’t consider myself to be that smart. I know some smart people, and I’m not one of them. That said, I’m going to go ahead and write about this anyway.

The first time I heard it said, it was Nancy Pelosi. She said “Health care is a right.” I thought, no, uh, I don’t think so.

Then, Obama said it in a speech the other day. To quote, he said;

So I’m going to keep doing everything in my power to make sure this law works as it’s supposed to. Because in the United States of America, health insurance isn’t a privilege – it is your right. And we’re going to keep it that way.

This was the speech in which Obama said:

But there’s also a group of Republicans in Congress working hard to confuse people, and making empty promises that they’ll either shut down the health care law, or, if they don’t get their way, they’ll shut down the government.

Well, this was the bill that Nancy Pelosi said “Well, you have to pass the bill so you can know what’s in it.” Hey President O, that’s pretty confusing, so maybe it’s not just the Republicans. I digress.

Ok, she said health care, he said health insurance, but I think they mean the same thing.

So, I went to the Constitution, and looked through the bill of rights. Didn’t see anything about health care or health insurance.

So, I went to the United Nations “Universal Declaration of Human Rights.” And there it was, right in Article 25:

Article 25.

• Everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and of his family, including food, clothing, housing and medical care and necessary social services, and the right to security in the event of unemployment, sickness, disability, widowhood, old age or other lack of livelihood in circumstances beyond his control.

So I guess that’s what Obama and Pelosi are referring too, the United Nations. Well, at least now we know.

I’m just a simple person, but if healthcare’s a right, then someone has to give it to me if I don’t have it. When Pelosi say’s healthcare is a right, what I hear is that if someone is unable to provide it for themselves, someone has to provide it for them. So, by calling healthcare a right, Pelosi commits us all to providing to people who can’t provide it for themselves. If Poptarts are a right, I should be able to get them. Not access to Poptarts, but Poptarts themselves. Frosted Blueberry.

I’ve nothing against giving someone a hand up when they need it. Yet, I was raised to think that everyone needs to haul their own freight. If you’ve ever seen the results of generational welfare, when people have lost their ambition, desire to achieve, even aspects of their human dignity, there’s nothing worse than that. We continue to create a nation of entitlement by the philosophy of calling things like this “a right.” It’s not that I don’t believe we can’t provide healthcare. It’s not that I want anyone to not have it if they need it.  It’s the philosophy of achievement that made our country great. It wasn’t made great by people expecting things would be given to them. It wont stay great by people expecting things will be given to them. There’s just a basic difference of philosophy.

I’m not saying that our health care industry doesn’t need reformed, or that changes don’t need to be made. They certainly do.  Fran and I can agree on one thing.  Insurance companies aren’t going to suffer through all of this. They will profit. They are not our friends. There are many issues here.

I’m against socialized medicine. You put your healthcare in the hands of the government and you’ll get what you get. Don’t kid yourself into thinking that Obamacare isn’t socialized medicine. It might not be in the classic sense, but this is the government’s foot in the door to controlling healthcare.   This is the start of another government bureaucracy, and we all know how those work. No problems get solved by bureaucracy. Think driver’s license bureau, or worse, the IRS. Yes, that IRS. You know, the one that’s been targeting certain groups and then lying about it. But I’m sure this one will be better.

Then there are the delays. According to  Congressional Research report back in 2011, approximately one-third of the deadlines required by (their own) law had been missed. Those delays have continued.
